Railway Spike Puller - Model SP108 for Production Pulling of Dog and Lock Spikes

Melvelle's proven international hydraulic spike pullers are more powerful and faster in the cycle time. Pulling forces are around 8000 kg for the 8T model with cycle times as low as 3 seconds (9hp Yanmar diesel engine). Overseas imported spike pullers only pull at the best 5300kg and ours on the same calculations are 9400kg. Our pullers will even pull out the Queensland Rail "Big Blue Dog Spikes". These are ona coal line with water dripping from the coal wagons onto the spikes extending right through the timber sleepers. The resulting rust knob on the end of the spike under the Austral;ian hardwood sleeper cannot be pulled out with any other production spike puller that we are aware of. This is Pulling power. The jaws are made to do this work.

If a spike is not gripped securely on the first attempt and the operator needs to return the jaws for a re-grip attempt, the very fast return cycle is very helpful speeding up the re-grip attempt.

Our pullers are counter balanced on a push-a-long trolley (with our new easy glide wheels) type and operator effort to lift the head is about 3kg. We have over 370 pullers in the Australian Railway system at time of publication. These are being used as production machines with all of the mechanised tracklaying machines throughout Australia, as well as many small fettlers gangs.

A range of engines are available, petrol or diesel, from 7 hp to 11 hp. Weights vary with the engine choices and options but for the main engine assembly, 130kg to about 145kg, sizes 2080mm x 600mm x 940mm high and the trolley weighs about 30 kg, dimensions - 1070 mm x 1660 mm (1435 gge) x 480 mm high. All have six handles and one crane lifting point for easier off track handling.

Trolleys are available in all track gauges as well as multigauge adjustable. The light tool tray is very useful for the operator to carry water and supplies as he walks along the track . Our trolleys are also very free wheeling along the track. The small push-a-long trolleys, have insulated axles and track wheels fully supported in sealed deep groove bearings.

For night operation, we can supply use the same engine's 12 volt lighting system to power a 35 watt quartz halogen work light. (Requires an engine lighting coil circuit) In addition we can fit engine exhaust gas catalytic scrubbers.

Spare parts are readily available from our warehouse in Newcastle and mostly are despatched within one working day of the receipt of an order.

Hydraulic Spike Pullers can also be incorporated with other rail machinery to form a Trackpack System.
