Balance Beam Dual Spindle & Multi-Spindle Drills- Models 148 & 118

Balance Beam Dual Multi-Spindle Drill 148 - Variable drill spindle speed to 1200rpm, infinitely variable power feed, automatic rail clamp to control feed loads, drill guides, hole depth control and pullout limits: Power Packs 7, 7.5, 9, 10 hp diesel or 11, 13, 16, 18, 20 hp petrol engines. The multi spindle option requires the larger engines.

Relatively light weight at 204kg for the 7hp diesel engine. Trolley weight 35kg with optional tool tray. Variable pattern options using the rail and rail seat as a template. Approximately four seconds to drill a hole pattern. Speed of drilling holes dependent on engine power and condition of drill bits.

MSB148

Also recommended are our tungsten carbide sleeper drill bits in 16mm, 19mm, 21mm sizes, with better clearance and wood chip transportation from the hole.

The operation of the machine requires a simple location of the guides followed by squeezing the trigger. The drill commences to feed, the cams toggle closed and the drill bits penetrate the timber through a tube guide. The cuttings are ejected through the front of the guide in full visibility of the operator. When the operator releases the trigger, the drill bits are retracted form the timber and as the bits clear the sleeper, the clamp is released and the system hydraulics unload system pressure when the upper stop is reached. The drill bits are simply held in place with 2 1/2“ NF grub screws. The fine thread ensures that the drills remain tight during the drilling cycles. All adjustments are fully variable for setting the drill to the best configurations. All of out products are test operated and set to as close as we can to your operating conditions before despatch. This ensures that we minimise your setup time and production starts as early as possible whilst you learn the finer points of the machine operations.

Multi-Spindle Timber Sleeper Borer 118

Our MSB118 Multi-Spindle drill is different in that the location for the drill is taken from one rail and the hole centers are located for the opposite rail. This requires that one rail be set in the right position in order to preset the rail gauge in the holes to be drilled for the second rail. The location and drive wheels are angled so that the machine will always be against the running face of the guide wheels and guide rail. The operator is required to lift the operator side of the drilling machine off the machine foot as he moves to the next sleeper.

The earlier drills utilised two gearboxes for the set location of the drilling pattern, however, we now use four small orbit motors, directly driving the drill spindles. Apart from a more simple drive train it also improves the flexibility and reduces the weight of the drills heads resulting in an overall lighter machine. The engine used is either 18hp or 20hp Honda direct driving a duplex hydraulic pump. Hydraulics for feed travel and along the track is used from one of the duplex pumps through a variable priority valve. All valve levers are direct operating and in the sense of operation, ie: down for down feed and left for left travel etc. Drill weight is added by the operator sitting on a lifting pipe handle to add to machine weight whilst drilling the hole pattern. There is a depth stop to limit the down feed depth to reduce the drill bits penetrating into the ballast. Drill bit speeds are up to 1200 rpm.
